An introduction of Vedic Mathematics

Vedic mathematics or Vedic maths as it is popularly known is alternate system of mathematics. The credit of its discovery goes to the Indian monk Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha. It was first time published as a book in 1965. Since then Vedic maths has been popularly accepted around the world as a rapid system of calculations using the brain as a tool. It is a combination of mental maths and use of some basic formulae.

Origin of Vedic maths

Ancient Indian texts called the Vedas contain the secrets of Vedic maths. There are four vedas namely, the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samavaeda and the Atharvaveda. A process to do day to day basic mathematics was also formulated during this vedic period. So vedic maths is also known as vedic calculations. It is the fourth veda, the Atharvaveda which possibly used by Shri Barathi Krishna Tirtha to re-discover Vedic maths. He was a renowned sanskrit scholar of his time. He was also an expert of mathematics, history and philosophy. Vedic maths challenges the conventional mathematics system as to being much simpler and faster. But teachers and parents who want their children to develop better mental skills find the methods of Vedic maths simpler and direct.

What is Vedic maths

The base of Vedic maths is found in 16 basic formulas called sutras. Upa-sutras or sub-sutras are derived from the main sutras. These collection of formula help a human to quickly calculate any mathematical problem like addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, square root and so on. Critics of Vedic maths argue that it is just a collection of mathematical tricks. But everyone agrees that even tricks are calculations to be done in the mind. Vedic maths is a powerful tool which forces the human mind to do all the work.
